As far back as I can remember, I’ve been fascinated by my ancestry. I’d wonder what my ancestors were like, what they did, how they lived their life. I’d ask, who were these people who cumulatively, together played such a huge part in who I am today? So, it is no surprise when the show “Who Do You Think You Are?” aired I was hooked. The show takes various celebrities through a journey of ancestral discovery where they often learn a lot more about themselves in the process. This was the beginning of my own quest to learn more about my ancestors.
My maternal great grandparents were all born in Italy and migrated to the US as adults. As I dug further to find out where in Italy my great grandparents were from, I stumbled upon a site discussing Americans ability to claim Italian dual citizenship. I was astonished to find out that, since my great grandfather was an Italian citizen when my grandfather was born, I was in fact also an Italian citizen through jure sanguinis or through right of blood. I just had to prove it to the Italian Consulate. So started my journey and many, many hours of research and work to claim Italian dual citizenship for myself, my husband and my children.
I’ve decided to document my experience so that I may help other Italian Americans who are also beginning their quest for Italian dual citizenship through jure sanguinis.
